Most mileage software starts with an account and a cloud database. RoadStance starts somewhere else: your device is the primary home for the working record.
Trip routes, receipt details, vehicle records, settings, and mileage logs are stored in the local RoadStance database. You do not need an account or a central RoadStance server for ordinary record-keeping.
That design gives you direct control over the working data, but it is important to describe it precisely. Local-first does not mean that a phone never communicates with any service. It means the core record does not depend on a RoadStance cloud database.
What stays on the device
The working database includes the records you create and review in the app:
- trip dates, times, locations, routes, distances, and purposes;
- business and personal classifications;
- vehicle and odometer context;
- receipt vendor, date, amount, address, and category details;
- report history and app settings.
RoadStance does not operate a central server that receives and stores your complete trip history for ordinary use. If you create a local backup, you choose where that file goes.
What may use network services
Some supporting functions are separate from the working database. Depending on the feature and your settings, the app may use services for map tiles, address lookup, routing, crash diagnostics, App Store or Play Store subscription checks, and optional cloud backup.
Those services do not change the basic ownership model: the device remains the working copy, and optional backups are stored in the location you choose. A network-dependent enrichment may be delayed without preventing the underlying local record from existing.
Why this matters
Local-first storage helps when connectivity is unreliable, when you want to work offline, and when you want a clear boundary around your records. It also means you remain responsible for device security and backups. A local database is not a substitute for maintaining a recoverable backup strategy.
RoadStance is designed to help you keep and review your records, not to become the custodian of a hidden copy of your route history.
